Dell Medical School Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Grand Rounds presents "Alcohol and Opioid Addiction: The Gain in the Brain is in the Pain." Presented by George F. Koob, PhD. June 15 from noon - 1:00. Dr. Koob is director of the National Institute of Health National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

By the end of this presentation, the audience participant should be able to:
  1. Review the heuristic framework of addiction as a 3-stage cycle.
  2. Discuss the construct of hyperkatifeia associated with the withdrawal/negative affect stage of the addiction cycle and explain how it drives addiction.
  3. Identify neurocircuits/neurotransmitters associated with hyperkatifeia and describe how they contribute to allostatic forces that cause the emotional pain of addiction.
