IPE Research

Interprofessional Curriculum Approach to Alzheimer's and Other Dementias

The HIPE Center is a collaborator on this $750,000 grant funded by the Texas Department of State Health Services. This project is led by Alyssa Aguirre, LCSW, assistant director of dementia care transformation in the Department of Neurology at Dell Medical School, and Jung Kwak, PhD, associate professor in the School of Nursing. It focuses on developing an innovative, interprofessional education and training program focused on brain health, early detection and treatment, and interprofessional health practice. This curriculum was piloted Spring 2025 and consists of two online modules and IPE Day, which is a synchronous, virtual experience. The modules contained profession-specific information thanks to UT Austin faculty who served as content experts from nursing, social work, speech-language pathology, medicine, and pharmacy. Integrated Behavioral Health Scholars Research Grant

The Integrated Behavioral Health Scholars (IBHS) Program is an innovative cross-campus initiative that prepares future social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and psychiatric nurse practitioners to deliver team-based behavioral health care in medically underserved communities across Texas. Since 2017, IBHS has graduated more than 300 scholars—and nearly 90% report practicing in underserved areas within a year of completion. In 2025, the program secured a $2.4 million Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training grant and $1.3 million from the Graduate Psychology Education Program, both funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration, along with a commitment of $200,000 from the UT School of Social Work. These investments will enable IBHS to expand over the next four years, training an additional 67 interprofessional behavioral health scholars. Learn more here
