Brianna Middleton, a pre-medical, unilaterally deaf undergraduate student, will host this forum to increase awareness of these disparities and encourage hearing individuals to use this knowledge to be better allies to the Deaf and hard of hearing community. The forum will also feature the following guest speakers: Dr. Christopher Moreland (a deaf physician and an associate professor at Dell Medical School) and a hard of hearing undergraduate student from the University of Texas at Austin.

Program Objectives: 
  • Know the disparities that affect people whoare Deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Know the social inequities that widen thesedisparities.
  • Know the etymology of race and ethnicity.
  • Know acceptable social terminology andcharacteristics of social identity in the Deafand hard of hearing community. 
  • Know potential solutions to reduce the racialand ethnic disparities among Deaf and hardof hearing patients. 
  • Know how to incorporate in one's life theprinciples of allyship to the Deaf and hard ofhearing community.
  • Know the racial and ethnic health disparitiesamong Deaf and hard of hearing patients.
  • Know why people who are Deaf or hard ofhearing do not need to be "fixed." 
  • Know the do's and don'ts of interacting withindividuals that are Deaf or hard of hearing.
